Digital Communications Specialist

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who is a recent graduate, perhaps in Marketing, English or Journalism, or someone who has 1-2 years working in a similar role.

What we do

We work with organisations working in many different areas, with startups, SMEs, public sector, third sector and everyone in between. We provide the skills to help them at all stages of their data journey – from strategy definition and training, through pipeline development and dashboard design to predictive modelling and AI solutions.  That may sound quite complex – and it is!  Your job will be to help us take all of this and turn it into content that shares our skills and our stories in easy to understand ways.  We’re a small business, and that brings plenty of opportunities to grow and develop in your role.

The role

Our new Digital Communications Specialist will be responsible for creating high quality, engaging content.  Our technical team have lots of inspiring stories and information to share, you’ll work alongside them to bring our expertise to life.  We share content through our website and social media channels, so you’ll need to be able to keep these up to date, and engage with people in a friendly and professional manner.

Our potential clients work across many different sectors. We want them to be able to look at our website and other marketing materials and understand our purpose, and identify with how we might help them.  This role involves learning about our business, and about our clients too. 

We are about to reveal our new branding, and you’ll be working alongside experienced digital designers to help apply this across all our collateral.

We don’t expect you to be an expert in everything, what we’re looking for is someone eager and willing to learn new tools and approaches, with support from your colleagues. 

This is a full time role, but we’re very open to discussions about flexible working to help achieve this.

Who we are looking for

The person we’re looking for will have excellent communication skills, with a focus on written content. They’ll bring an informative and engaging approach to communicating our message.  They’ll be proactive at finding out information, seeking out additional content to enhance our content and keep it relevant and up to date. Getting to know our clients will be something they’ll be keen to do, to help them understand who our future ones may be.  They’ll be the sort of person who enjoys continuing to learn and keeping up to date with new tools and approaches. Most importantly, they’ll want to be an active part of the team and willing to work openly and transparently to achieve the best result for the company.

Where we are based

We’re usually based in the Bayes Centre, Edinburgh’s data innovation hub. We have a flexible approach to location and working pattern: if you prefer to mostly work from home, that’s fine with us. Occasionally we have days when we’d like the whole team to be in the office. As such, we’re looking for someone within easy travelling distance of Edinburgh.

The work:

  • Understand the business needs and develop informative and engaging content to create awareness and develop the brand
  • Work closely with experienced designers and our technical team to rollout our new branding, developing the relevant website content as needed to support
  • Ensure all-around consistency (style, fonts, images and tone of voice)
  • Work with our technical and client facing teams to create case studies to promote our products/services
  • Proof-read and finalise others blog posts prior to publication
  • Produce online marketing materials, including blog posts
  • Develop printed collateral for conferences
  • Work collaboratively with our senior management team to research industry-related topics to create thought leadership pieces
  • Promote content on social media
  • Ensure our website is kept up to date
  • Ad hoc creation of marketing and social media content

The skills we’re looking for: 

  • Strong communication skills, with demonstrable ability to communicate complex ideas in plain and simple language
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English, a high standard of grammar, and a strong understanding of a range of language styles
  • Enthusiastic approach to growing a strong understanding of our target market
  • Creative approach to our communications, and how we incorporate images and style to enhance our offerings
  • Great attention to detail
  • Ability to research, investigate and come up with your own potential solutions
  • A clear passion for a future in content
  • An efficient approach to creating regular content
  • A positive attitude, with the ability to get things done while knowing when to reach out to others for advice

Additionally, we’re interested in:

  • Knowledge of WordPress, or similar tools
  • Experience of design tools such as Canva
  • Awareness of SEO approaches
  • Experience of using and editing templates in Microsoft Office suite
