It’s a special day today!*
Jo Watts, our CEO shares some thoughts about the past four years…
The 31st July 2021 is Effini’s 4th birthday. I can’t believe how quickly that time has flown. It feels like no time at all since I started out on my mission to make data accessible to all companies whatever their size.
It’s certainly been a journey, with all the associated highs and lows of setting up a business, but what I’m most excited about is that we are sticking true to our original mission. We are working with a broader range of organisations and sectors than I ever thought possible, right across the UK. One day I’m talking about travel bookings and the next it’s the data behind manufacturing socks!
I’ve always felt that the secret to improving data usage isn’t the hiring of data scientists – though they come in handy – but it’s to upskill a whole organisation around their use of data. That’s why I’m so proud of what we’ve done around data education. We’ve developed workshops, we’ve written a text book, we’ve designed courses and now we are creating lessons.
Where we can, we’ve focused on projects and organisations that are making a positive impact. For example, last year we undertook an impact collaboration with the Data for Children Collaborative around the best approach to tackling the socioeconomic impact of Covid-19 on children. This year we’ve undertaken a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) project on Care Home data. Active involvement in real-world problems is important to ensure we stay grounded around the potential and challenges that using data brings.
I haven’t been able to do this on my own. I’m totally indebted to Sam Rhynas for sharing my vision for Effini and joining me in leading this journey. I’m excited to say that the Effini team is now 7-strong and growing all the time. They are enthusiastic, knowledgeable, fun to work with and doing great things for our clients. Who knows what number we’ll be at this time next year.
So what’s in the plan for next year? We’re in the process of building out our Data Skills offerings with a dedicated website – watch this space. We’ll continue to refine our unique approach to the creation of a Data Strategy – making it even more accessible and less scary for all. There’ll be lots more building of secure and efficient systems for clients to automate their reporting, clean up their data and give them back time to do their more interesting activities.
And finally we’ll be having some fun – which I hope will start with eating some birthday cake!
